Public urged to help find criminals who damaged tree
Published: Thursday 11 April 2024
The council is trying to find who is responsible for illegally cutting one of its mature trees in East Kilbride.
An investigation is now underway to find out who decided to take the law into their own hands and employ a tree surgeon to drastically prune a mature tree on council land between Sycamore Crescent and Juniper Avenue in the town.
Not only was this a criminal act but it also has an environmental and visual impact on the area. Not only is there a financial cost to replacing this tree but also the loss to the local area of the many benefits that trees provide for our well-being.
Kevin Carr, the council’s head of Facilities, Waste and Grounds Services, said: “We are asking members of the public to help us with our investigation to find out who is responsible for the damage caused to a tree on council land.
“The tree is surrounded by houses so we hope that anyone who saw this illegal activity will come forward to help.
“Whoever did this may think they have done the right thing. However, this is a common lime tree which will regenerate quickly and come back with even more straggly growth.”
Anyone with any information should complete our online enquiry form (name and address required) or email landservices@southlanarkshire.gov.uk
As the damage has been caused by the deliberate act of individuals, once the council identifies those responsible, it will consider referring the matter to the police.
If you have any issues with a tree in your area please go to our Trees - Arboriculture pages for more details.
